‘Pupils have a right to receive an overall religious education that will enable them, in the light of the faith of the Church, to engage with the deepest questions of life and find reasons for the hope that is within them (1 Peter 3:15)…Therefore Religious Education is never simply one subject among many, but the foundation of the entire educational process.’
(Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, January 2000.)
The Second Vatican Council describes Religious Education as having three purposes:
‘Its first purpose is to ensure that the baptised increase in their understanding of the faith which they have received.’
To fulfil our aims and objectives St Ambrose Catholic Academy follows the instructions given by the Archdiocese of Liverpool. We are in the process of introducing the new Religious Education Directory: To Know you More Clearly. Currently, E.Y.F.S. through to Year 4 are using this as their scheme of work and Year 5 and Year 6 are using Come and See.
To Know You More Clearly follows the Religious Education Directory. We cover 6 branches throughout the year with each branch the same for all year groups however, with progressive content, allowing children to explore each branch in depth as they progress. Each branch follows four parts – hear, believe, celebrate and live. These branches can be found in our R.E. Policy.
Come and See is an invitation to exploration and promise of life for everyone. It offers the opportunity to search, to explore, to discover, and to respond; this is part of what it is to be human. It raises questions and provides materials for children to reflect on their own experiences. For all children the programme will raise questions of meaning and purpose and enable children to think critically, providing materials for reflecting on their own experiences.
Pupils will be enabled to explore the skills and values and the way of life of the Catholic traditions, developing good attitudes and dispositions so that they are instilled with a ‘love of learning’ and a desire to go on learning.
The children will spend the first week of term exploring our school rules, class charters and our Mission Statement.
